THE "ULTIMA THULE"...

In the opening day of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, at Lincoln Center, Nicholas K was present with the Fall-winter 2013 Collection.
Siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, were inspired by the 'Arctic explorations of the late 19th century', focusing in the adventures of Peter Freuchen, a Danish explorer, author (Adventures in the Arctic, Book of the Eskimos ad Book  of the Seven Seas), journalist and anthropologist, who mapped the Arctic at start of the twentieth and who established the Thule Trading Station at  Cape York (Uummannaq), Greenland, as a trading base, named Thule because it was the most northerly trading post in the world, literally the "Ultima Thule".

Thule as Tile on the Carta Marina of 1539 by Olaus Magnus, where it is shown located to the north west of the Orkey ilslands, with a "moster, seen in 1537", a whale ("Balena"), and an orca nearby.

Thule Trading Station became the home base for a series of seven expeditions, known as the Thule Expeditions, between 1912 and 1933.

The main 'focus' of this collection are the layering, so the designer duo suggests wearing knitted and leather pieces, silk and buttery jerseys, shortened 'harem' pants and 'Joggers' featuring a dropped crotch and 'billowy' blouses featuring architectural necklines, plaid jackets with fur collars and large lapels and sexy diaphanous dresses with skin-revealing transparent inserts, as well as 'hooded' knit capes and hooded knitwear.

The color palette came filled with neutral colors from, winter whites, 'coal' blacks, cool grays, to khaki and camel tones.

The models on the catwalk, with the silhouettes, and 'Tie-dye' effects, look like a group of 'survivalist gear' to help  Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games' movie.

This new collection for me is the one with most design proposal from the American collections, having pieces from highly wearable to highly unusual, where designers rounded out the looks with Pilots goggles, accessories in stone, leather, horn and  'Danner' boots, producing an 'apocalyptic' impact on the runway.
